Description

Have you ever wanted to juggle, but you've been intimidated or thought it was too challenging? Think again!

Juggling is for everyone, and there are so many different styles; all you need is a little time and dedication, and you'll find yourself manipulating circus props in no time. In a one hour exploration, Ian will take you through the basics of prop manipulation, from scarves and ribbons to balls and rings (perhaps more if time allows!)

This workshop is suitable for all ages and abilities.

Welcome to the Mycroverse! A NEW Circus Production.

We invite you to enter into an alternate reality where mycelium flourish in symbiotic relationality with the natural world and elements. This utopian existence is soon threatened with the arrival of the alluring, yet destructive atomic mushroom race and its penchant for greed, violence and extraction to fuel its insatiable appetite. This performance provides a stirring metaphor for Western colonialism and its ongoing destructive impact the world over, particularly on Indigenous peoples and communities, with special emphasis on nuclear colonialism in New Mexico.

Since Fall of 2022, Wise Fool has been working on the production of a new Circus Show! This will be our first show since the Pandemic and we are delighted to return to sharing the circus arts with our community! Our cast of professional artists has been working collaboratively to generate this show this spring. The show will feature stilt walking, acrobatics, juggling, slackline and aerial acrobat feats.

What is FLOW and Why are we doing it??
FLOW is an awakening to what was, what is, and what could be, marking the Rio Chiquito’s path (now Water Street), and unfolding the history of what was once a major water source for the city’s flora, fauna, and agriculture.

FLOW is a procession of giant puppets, street theatre, music, poetry, dance and ceremony running from the source Spring at the northwest corner of Paseo de Peralta and Alameda, following the Rio Chiquito (now Water Street) to its confluence with the Santa Fe River near the Guadalupe Church.

FLOW offers free public arts workshops May 27 and June 3 at Wise Fool NM, (1131 B Siler Road) to engage, educate and inspire all community members about Santa Fe’s water and water history. At these workshops, we’ll share histories of the Rio Chiquito and the Santa Fe River as inspiration for puppets, banners, movement and poetry about water and the Rio Chiquito. Resulting artworks will inhabit the procession, coming to life as we community members wear, dance, speak and sing our relationship to the waters.

FAQs

Q: Do you want to see a full act or a quick demonstration of what I can do?

A: You have 5-7 minutes to give us an idea of the kind of artist you are in relation to your chosen apparatus / skill. We will be looking for artistry, technical ability, presence, quality of movement, and your ability to connect with the audience (in this case, us!). Please use your time slot in whatever way you think will best help us understand what you do.

Q: I am unable to be at the audition in Santa Fe, but I’d still like to audition! Can I send in an audition tape?

A: Yes. Please email 2-3 videos of your performances to alishiya@wisefoolnm.org by Friday, February 24, and we will consider you. (Sooner is better!) Please also include a video of a brief physical improvisation on the themes laid out in the concept section above. We are happy to consider you, but please keep in mind that your presence at the audition is strongly encouraged.

Q: I would like to show you multiple skills at my audition. Will I have enough time?

A: Please let us know what you would like to show us and whether you are able to audition with multiple skills in a row, and we will allow extra time for you. Ex: I have prepared a juggling act and a trapeze act and can audition with them both in the same time slot.

Q: I am auditioning as part of a duo/trio/group. Is that ok?

A: Yes, please just let us know. You will not be allowed extra time for group acts unless you will be showing us multiple skills. (see previous Q&A above)

Q: I am a local artist but I’m unable to be at the audition. Could I come in another time?

A: We may be able to work with you. Please contact us!

Q: It is difficult to set up the equipment I need to show you my act. How can I audition?

A: Please send us a video of an act using your apparatus. You will still be given an audition slot so you can come in and we can meet you.

Bread and Puppet are coming to Santa Fe!

Wise Fool is thrilled to host Bread and Puppet's show - The Apocalypse Defiance Circus!

Come see their show at Wise Fool's studio on Tuesday, November 15th, at 7:30pm! The ticekts are $20-$40 sliding scale and they will sell out so get them asap!

The circus is coming! The circus is coming! Bread & Puppet Theater makes a rare cross-country tour this fall 2022. With performances coast to coast, from New York to Seattle, Los Angeles to New Orleans, the iconic political puppet theater company brings Our Domestic Resurrection Circus: Apocalypse Defiance to over 50 cities and towns. Fifty-two years ago Bread & Puppet Theater performed Our Domestic Resurrection Circus for the first time at Goddard College in Plainfield, VT. Since then, this capacious and provocative title has served as the basis of annual spectacles that generations of audiences have come to rely on for satire and celebration in the face of intolerable circumstances. This year, B&P will take up the tradition again, albeit with a timely subtitle: The Apocalypse Defiance Circus.

The show, says Schumann, is “in response to our totally unresurrected capitalist situation, not only the hundreds of thousands of unnecessarily sacrificed pandemic victims but our culture’s unwillingness to recognize Mother Earth’s revolt against our civilization. Since we earthlings do not live up to our earthling obligations, we need resurrection circuses to yell against our own stupidity.”

After the show Bread & Puppet will serve its famous sourdough rye bread with aioli, and Bread & Puppet’s “Cheap Art” – books, posters, postcards, pamphlets and banners from the Bread & Puppet Press – will be for sale.

When: Tuesday, November 15th at 7:30pm

Where: Wise Fool Studio (1131 Siler Rd. B)

Tickets: $20-$40
