Request for Proposals (RFP) for Beyond the Binary Show Director

Wise Fool New Mexico (WFNM) is a nationally recognized social circus organization. It was established in 2000 by a collective of queer women exploring puppetry and circus arts as a vehicle to promote social justice and empower people in our communities. Wise Fool has been a pioneer of social circus and founded to uplift messages and actions. Over the years, Wise Fool has reached thousands of youth, adults, and families with circus classes and camps, creating more than 30 original productions such as Circus Luminous, CircAspire, Ignite, BUST!, ReUnite, and countless youth circus shows.

Wise Fool New Mexico's new production, titled BEYOND THE BINARY, will explore gender issues beyond the confines of the gender binary. While expanding the present-day gender discussion, the performance will portray the richness of gender expansive culture. Aligning with Social Circus values, its narrative will be thought-provoking, at times provocative, thus aiming to raise awareness and transform the binary mindset.

BEYOND THE BINARY will be an awe-inspiring performance filled with acts by astounding acrobats, clowns, and dancers who perform breathtaking high-flying maneuvers. Impressive puppets and costumes will support the shows, entertaining the audience and demonstrating our passion for social justice.

Proposals must be submitted by October 8, 2023 at 5:00pm MTN to Alishiya (alishiya@wisefoolnm.org)

FAQs

Q: Do you want to see a full act or a quick demonstration of what I can do?

A: You have 5-7 minutes to give us an idea of the kind of artist you are in relation to your chosen apparatus / skill. We will be looking for artistry, technical ability, presence, quality of movement, and your ability to connect with the audience (in this case, us!). Please use your time slot in whatever way you think will best help us understand what you do.

Q: I am unable to be at the audition in Santa Fe, but I’d still like to audition! Can I send in an audition tape?

A: Yes. Please email 2-3 videos of your performances to alishiya@wisefoolnm.org by Friday, February 24, and we will consider you. (Sooner is better!) Please also include a video of a brief physical improvisation on the themes laid out in the concept section above. We are happy to consider you, but please keep in mind that your presence at the audition is strongly encouraged.

Q: I would like to show you multiple skills at my audition. Will I have enough time?

A: Please let us know what you would like to show us and whether you are able to audition with multiple skills in a row, and we will allow extra time for you. Ex: I have prepared a juggling act and a trapeze act and can audition with them both in the same time slot.

Q: I am auditioning as part of a duo/trio/group. Is that ok?

A: Yes, please just let us know. You will not be allowed extra time for group acts unless you will be showing us multiple skills. (see previous Q&A above)

Q: I am a local artist but I’m unable to be at the audition. Could I come in another time?

A: We may be able to work with you. Please contact us!

Q: It is difficult to set up the equipment I need to show you my act. How can I audition?

A: Please send us a video of an act using your apparatus. You will still be given an audition slot so you can come in and we can meet you.
