About The Show
We invite you into an alternate reality where mycelium flourish in symbiotic relationality with the natural world and elements. This utopian existence is soon threatened with the arrival of the alluring, yet destructive atomic mushroom race and its penchant for greed, violence and extraction to fuel its insatiable appetite. This performance provides a stirring metaphor for Western colonialism and its ongoing detrimental impact the world over, particularly on Indigenous peoples and communities, with special emphasis on nuclear colonialism in New Mexico.
Director’s Note
I’m honored to be in community with an organization I greatly admire in O’ga Pogeh for its commitment to social justice through the arts. Both my daughter and I have been involved in Wise Fool NM programming over the years. It has been a blessing to channel the grassroots work I do on behalf of Indigenous people into this performance; to find a creative way to represent the ongoing impacts of colonialism on Indigenous people regionally and globally, with particular attention to nuclear colonialism in New Mexico. I truly believe the future of the human race depends on Indigenous peoples’ traditional knowledges and that unless we have an honest reckoning of what has happened and is still happening to Indigenous people in America, we will never be able to move forward as a nation. Until then, I will continue to devote my life to Indigenous liberation along with my beloved comrades who share this vision for our people. Join us, work with us, our future depends on it!
